Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
