A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using these medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
