A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
